Purpose: WHOIS is not a protocol served by a server but rather a query and response protocol used to obtain information about registered domain names, IP addresses, and autonomous system numbers.
Vulnerabilities: WHOIS information can be used for reconnaissance and social engineering attacks, such as spear phishing or targeted attacks. Additionally, WHOIS servers themselves may be vulnerable to DoS attacks or unauthorized access if not properly secured.
